Tax Advantages. The
Economic Stimulus Act of 2012 and IRS Tax Code Section 179has increased tax benefits for leased equipment.
- Lease payments may be treated as an expense and be fully tax deductible in the year the equipment is placed in service. An operating lease is not considered a purchase but rather a tax deductible overhead expense.
- Allows a 50% special depreciation allowance for leased equipment (expires December 2012). This special bonus is available for equipment used for commercial business for the production of income before January 1, 2013. This allows an additional 50% 1st year depreciation on the adjusted basis of qualified new equipment.
- Annual depreciation amount has been increased to $250,000. It allows businesses to deduct the first $250,000 of equipment, purchased in 2012, from their taxable income.
